Exterior Painters in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire

Aberdeen weather is hard on paint. Wind, rain, frost and salt air off the North Sea will find any weak spot. We prepare exteriors properly and use masonry and wood coatings that are made for it, so the finish lasts years rather than seasons.

What's included

Exterior surfaces we paint

Every quote includes the preparation, materials and a full tidy-up, so the price you see is the price you pay.

  • Masonry, render and harling (roughcast) walls
  • Fascias, soffits and bargeboards
  • Timber windows, sills and front doors
  • Garage doors, gates and metal railings
  • Fences, sheds and garden structures
  • Repairs to cracks and loose render before painting

Built for North East weather

The single biggest cause of peeling exterior paint is poor preparation. We wash down and scrape back loose paint, treat any mould and algae, fill and repair cracks, and prime bare timber and metal before applying the top coats.

On masonry and harling we use breathable, weather-resistant masonry paints that let moisture escape rather than trapping it behind the film. Coastal properties in places like Stonehaven, Portlethen and Newtonhill get products chosen for salt exposure.

Harling and roughcast painting

Harling is everywhere in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire, from 1970s estates in Westhill and Bridge of Don to older cottages out in the shire. Whether it's wet-dash harling, dry-dash, roughcast or pebbledash, the deep texture makes it slow to paint well. Rushed jobs leave pinholes and thin patches that let the weather straight back in.

We start by checking for hollow or cracked areas and repairing them, then wash down and treat any green algae. We use a long-pile roller and brush to work a breathable masonry paint fully into the texture, with two full coats so the colour is even and there are no gaps.

Can you paint harling?

Yes, as long as it's sound. Harling that's sound and dry takes masonry paint well and a fresh coat can transform a tired, stained house. The exceptions are walls with widespread hollow or crumbling harling, which need repairing or re-harling first, and walls with damp problems behind them, which need the cause fixing before any paint goes on. We'll tell you honestly on the free visit which applies to your house.

Render and masonry painting

Smooth render, sand and cement, and painted brick all need the same basics: clean, sound, dry and primed where needed. We fill cracks with a flexible filler so they don't reappear the first winter, and stabilise chalky old paint before recoating.

Windows, doors and woodwork

Exterior timber needs to be sound before it's painted. We sand back, fill and prime any bare or soft spots, then finish with a durable exterior gloss or satin. A freshly painted front door is one of the quickest ways to lift the look of a house.

When to paint outside in Aberdeen

The best window for exterior work is roughly April to September, when surfaces are dry and temperatures stay above what the paint needs to cure. Summer books up early, so it's worth getting a quote in spring.

FAQ

Exterior Painting questions

What's the best time of year for exterior painting in Aberdeen?

Usually April to September. Paint needs dry surfaces and temperatures above about 5 to 8°C to cure properly, so we plan exterior work around the forecast and avoid frosty or wet spells.

Can you paint harling or roughcast?

Yes. Harling, roughcast and pebbledash all take breathable masonry paint well once any loose or cracked areas are repaired and the walls are clean and dry. It needs a long-pile roller and two full coats worked into the texture. We'll look at the condition on the free visit.

Can you paint granite?

Natural granite is usually best left unpainted, as it's designed to weather and breathe. Where granite has already been painted, we can repaint it using a breathable masonry paint. For listed buildings or conservation areas, check with the council before changing the colour.

How long does exterior paint last?

With good preparation and a quality masonry paint, you can typically expect many years before it needs redoing, though exposed and coastal walls will weather faster. Woodwork usually needs attention sooner than masonry.

Do you need scaffolding?

Most two-storey houses can be done from ladders and towers. Where scaffolding is needed for safety or access, we'll include it in the quote so there are no surprises.
